Full Time / Part Time Full Time Funding Position Responsibilities Internal Posting? Position Summary

  • The Outdoor Program Coordinator, Trips & Climbing Center will be responsible for : Overseeing day-to-day administrative functions of the Trips Program and Climbing Center including;
  • hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, managing the Climbing Center budget, and payroll for student employees. The position will be responsible for designing, planning, scheduling, publicizing, coordinating, and instructing a variety of instructional programs and classes at the Student Recreation Center Climbing Center and Outdoor Program.

    Other duties include implementing risk management procedures and policies, directing safety inspections and maintenance of the Climbing Center and Climbing Center equipment.

    The position will manage the Trips Program staff trainings, permit management and oversight of field policies and procedures.

    The Coordinator will assist the Director, Outdoor Programs with other duties within the Outdoor Program and Rental Center, such as leading a wide variety of wilderness and outdoor recreational and developmental activities for the university community.

    Responsibilities Job Duty Function Manage Climbing Center operations and facility by : Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of Climbing Center activities in accordance with climbing wall and outdoor programming industry standards and departmental policies;
  • Develop and implement innovative programs and revenue-generating activities at the Climbing Center;
  • Develop marketing and publicity materials such as schedules, newsletters, flyers, bulletin boards, and news releases for Climbing Center events;
  • Evaluate and assess effectiveness of program activities and events;
  • Design, plan, schedule, organize, publicize, and instruct a variety of Climbing Center instructional activities such as university courses, special clinics for various university groups and classes, area schools, scouts, churches, and other community groups or stakeholders;
  • Maintain a positive, safe and inclusive environment in all programs and facilities.

    Responsibilities Job Duty Function Leadership within operational duties of Outdoor Program by : Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Instruct and lead a wide variety of wilderness, outdoor recreational and developmental activities for the university community;
  • Develop and implement training programs and professional development opportunities for student trip leaders;
  • Supervise in-field programs through logistical preparation and on-call commitments;
  • Assist in researching and developing policies and procedures relating to program activities based on current industry standards;
  • Plan, schedule, develop marketing and publicity materials for programs and activities through a variety of digital and written formats;
  • Assist in developing and scheduling program activities;
  • Provide program outreach through delivering presentations on outdoor related topics for a wide variety of constituents;
  • Assist in assessment, evaluation, and development of programs within the framework of the Outdoor Program, Campus Recreation and Student Affairs strategic plan.

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate student employees and volunteer staff within the Trips Program and Climbing Center;
  • Ensure employees have proper up-to-date training certifications for specific climbing and outdoor programs and first aid administration;
  • Manage university, department and area specific trainings and certifications for student employees;
  • Process biweekly payroll;
  • Train project service delivery staff, administrative support, and volunteers.

    Responsibilities Job Duty Function Ensure accountability for risk management by : Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Monitor relevant laws, regulations, and program practices and disseminate information to appropriate staff;
  • Identify and develop administrative procedures to comply with federal and state laws and regulations;
  • Justify administrative actions by citing relevant authorizing rules, regulations, guidance, institutional policies and unit policies;
  • Develop and implement appropriate risk management procedures and policies related to the Climbing Center facility and programs along with the Trips Program, including emergency action plans and management of accident / incident reports;
  • Perform regular safety inspections of the Climbing Center facility and equipment to ensure compliance with prescribed risk management protocols;
  • Direct daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance schedules, and overseeing specific maintenance and repairs as needed on facility infrastructure;
  • Develop working relationships with University Counsel, Risk Management, Environmental Health and Safety.

  • Develop and monitor Climbing Center budget; initiating appropriate purchases; collecting and depositing Climbing Center income;
  • Maintain and monitor the Center’s budget;
  • Maintain regular and routine contact with the Unit’s Financial Technician to ensure proper accounting policies and procedures;
  • Maintain the inventory control system for the facility.

  • Implement special projects;
  • Participate in professional development activities;
  • Must be a member of applicable professional organizations associated with the position;
  • Serve on university level committees, regional and national professional organization boards as requested; collaborate with campus departments and programs;
  • attend meetings and retreats;
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with other UI departments, local recreational facilities, state and city park departments, state and federal land management agencies, and industry associates;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director to accomplish goals of the Outdoor Program;
  • Assist with Outdoor Rental Center customer service as necessary.

    Position Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s Degree in outdoor recreation, physical education, kinesiology, sport science, natural science or related field Plus 1 3 year’s related experience.

    Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a university environment within the framework of programs and services, policies and procedures, strategic plans, and the overall mission and goals of an educational institution.

    Ability to work independently to create effective programs and services that serve the entire university community.

    Demonstrated ability to train, supervise, develop and coordinate student staff including skill attainment, risk management, conflict resolution and negotiation.

    Perform, lead, and instruct participants in strenuous wilderness recreational and educational activities with broad based experience in teaching and leading multiple of the following competencies : backpacking, leave no trace, snow sports, glacier travel, avalanche safety, mountain biking, navigation, flatwater and whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting and climbing.

    Requires excellent verbal and written communications skills.

    Requires excellent interpersonal skills.

    Must be proficient in use of Microsoft programs; including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    Experience and proven competence in an indoor rock climbing facility.

    Demonstrated experience rock climbing on both natural and artificial terrain.

    Ability to work flexible hours beyond a typical workweek; evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Certification in Wilderness First Responder and CPR or equivalent required.

    Secure a valid Idaho driver’s license and meet University of Idaho driving standards.

    Ability to perform the essential job functions with or without accommodation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Master’s degree in outdoor recreation, physical education, kinesiology, sport science, natural science or related field.

    Experience performing similar work in a University setting.

    Three or more years of progressive experience in recreation supervision desired.

    Certification in indoor or outdoor climbing site management or instruction via PCIA, AMGA, CWA or equivalent.

    Certification in a variety of outdoor related disciplines from industry providers : Swiftwater Rescue Technician, ACA Whitewater Kayak or Raft, Avalanche Educator, Leave No Trace Master Educator, and others.

    Experience teaching academic climbing or other outdoor recreation courses in a University setting.

    Demonstrated experience in program administration, permit application, and field work.

    Demonstrated experience in training field staff in multiple disciplines.

    Knowledge of recreation management software (ex. RecTrac)
