The Public Information Officer (PIO) serves as the official spokesperson for the University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and provides high-
level communications on behalf of college leadership. The PIO executes a variety of college-wide communication and media relations initiatives designed to enhance the college’s ties to its internal and external constituents.
This position produces and disseminates information in accordance with CALS and U of I goals, objectives and priorities under the direction of the Director of Communications and Strategic Initiatives.
It is expected for the chosen candidate to have a level of understanding of national, regional, state and local news outlets with regard to agriculture, science, research and technology coverage and the ability to develop and implement a strategy to earn a progressive level of awareness and placement for CALS stories in the media.
The PIO develops and writes hard news, features, releases, media advisories, newspaper, magazine and newsletter articles for distribution to the lay and professional media on research and other activities in science and agricultural research / outreach and other technical or technology areas.
In addition, this position maintains day-to-day relations with the media, to include handling media queries, media interviews, preparing news releases and media kits, and promoting stories.
The PIO provides direct and proactive advice, consultation and assistance to college leadership regarding public information matters, to include direct assistance in researching, providing information and developing messages.
Location of this position is negotiable. The successful candidate may be located in either Moscow, Boise, or Twin Falls Idaho.

Position Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, English or other related field and at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.
Experience communicating with the press and other media, writing news releases and pitching stories.
Must possess exceptional skills in interviewing scientists and interpreting, translating and writing technical, complex or specialized material into information understandable and interesting to the public.
Strong knowledge of agricultural and science media contacts and / or a proven ability to develop such relationships quickly.
Advanced writing, communication and presentation skills.
Ability to write executive-level communications for internal and external audiences.
Knowledge of journalism, public relations and general communications principles and practices.
Ability to investigate and analyze information.
Basic knowledge of photography and the use of digital cameras.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Ability to develop stories independently.
Experience working in a team.
Knowledge of and experience writing with AP style.
Knowledge of technical writing principles
Successful experience with placing science and / or agricultural stories with regional and national media.
Experience working in higher education.
Skills in using word processing software.
Skills in digital photography, video and web.
Academic background in science or agriculture.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Must be able to lift, carry, and or otherwise move up to 50lb and be able to stand for extended periods of time.
